An observational study monitors the outcomes in subjects treated in clinical practice with medical treatments. In particular, treatment assignment is at the discretion of the patient and physician and it is not possible for the sponsor to randomize treatment. Observational studies can be used for post-approval safety studies and for comparative effectiveness research.
